City qualifying runs through Friday

There are several local elections that will appear on the ballot this November. Here is the slate of candidates who qualified at the Pickens County Elections Office by press time Tuesday afternoon.

Qualifying runs through Friday, August 23.

Jasper: Mayor – Steve Lawrence; City Council – Jim Looney (seat currently held by Tony Fountain); City Council – Kirk Raffield (seat held by Kirk Raffield); City Council – John Foust, Jr. (seat held by John Foust, Jr).

No one had qualified in Nelson or Talking Rock, but the following seats are up for election: Nelson – Three council seats currently held by Dustin Hamby, Nathan Hamby, and Kelsey Riehl; and Talking Rock – Mayor (currently held by Randy Banks); and two council seats, one currently held by Melissa Weaver and one recently vacated by Caleb Gay.

Pickens County Elections Supervisor Julianne Roberts said in the event no one qualifies in Nelson or Talking Rock she would have to call for another week of qualifying, “but I’ve never had that happen. Sometimes people wait until Friday to see who has come in and qualified.”
