Plants, plants and more plants at Farmers’ Market

farmers

Every 2nd Saturday of the month the Pickens County Master Gardeners will have educational programs at the Jasper Farmers’ Market.

By Heather Giambra

Another fine day for our farmers’ market, despite the possibility of rain, that did not appear. We are grateful to be dry and warm to conduct business, despite the smaller turnout. Thank goodness the Bark in The Park event drew dogs and their people in as they took notice and sauntered over to peruse the great things our vendors have to offer.

Most notably, was the increase in plant vendors, offering flowers, herbs, perennials, and evergreens. Buice Family Farms had gorgeous dark pink petunias ready to fill containers and flower beds. They are located on Hwy 53 West.

Our Master Gardeners of Pickens County tent was up and womanned by Diane Nelson and Linda Kumfert. Diane presented 8 Months of Spring to Fall Spectacular Water Wise Perennial Gardening. She had lots of information for gardeners of all experience levels. And there were many plants available for a donation. The plants are donated by our local Master Gardeners.

The donation from the plants goes to the 4H program to helps 4H kids with the cost of camp this summer. We truly appreciate the donations and hope the donors enjoy the plants that they pick for their garden. We know the kids will appreciate the opportunity to go to camp.

Besides potted vegetable plants, the Johnsons offered fresh eggs and greens for home cooking. Not to be missed cupcakes, breads, and other baked goodies are always available, along with clever craftwork of all sorts. The red cedar birdhouses that are made by Floyd Reed are beautiful, creative, and one-of-a-kind. One (or more) would be a wonderful addition to your yard. The lucky birds who move in will be very proud.

Metalworks & Powder Coating have wonderful metal, power-coated signs to decorate your home. You can even have a custom plate made to show your interests, like fishing, hunting, or Armed Forces affiliation. You might consider having your business logo done and hang it to show customers they have found the right place whether it’s a knitting business, honey, artist in residence, accounting, landscaper, builder, pest control, pet sitter, etc. There is no limit to possibilities.

Please note, this year the MGPC, will be setting up our tent the fourth Saturday of this month, so you will have more gardening information and a chance to pick up a plant (or plants) for a donation to the 4H camping program.

Please, come and see all the great things available at the Jasper Farmers Market. You don’t want to miss getting something good for you, your home, your friends and family. We are open every Saturday from 7:30-12 in the park & ride lot.

The Jasper Farmers Market is the first project of the first class of Pickens County Master Gardeners. For more information call the Pickens County Extension Office at 706-253-8840, and check out our Facebook page – Jasper Farmers’ Market.
