One dead in officer-involved shooting in Salacoa area

PRESS RELEASE CHEROKEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - At approximately 8:15 pm Tuesday night Cherokee Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute on Hancock Mountain Trl. in the Salacoa community of northern Cherokee County. Responding deputies were provided information there was a male inside the home holding a firearm to the head of female. The first deputy on the scene approached the mobile home on foot and through the open front door observed armed male pointing a firearm at a female that was later determined to be his estranged wife.

The deputy gave verbal commands for the male to drop the weapon but the male refused. The deputy fired his weapon.  The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. The female had injuries to her head where witnesses stated the suspect struck her with the firearm. She was transported by ambulance to Northside Cherokee Hospital.
No names will be released at this time.  As with any officer involved shooting, the GBI is conducting an investigation.
