tasteofpickensElections are over, so let's eat

Event publicity

With elections now a matter of history, Taste of Pickens Event Coordinator Regina Camp thinks it’s time for other serious business. “Fudge or coconut pie?” she asks. “This year we have over 20 restaurants, bakers and caterers offering our guests their best specialties, not to mention the eight gourmet cakes to be auctioned.  It’ll be hard to make a decision.”

Discriminating diners can first cruise the tables lining the wall of the great hall, narrowing their choices. Here’s a preview:

61 Main - Beef Brisket, Crispy Wonton; Ably Asian -Crab Rangoon/California Rolls; Appalachian Grill - Shrimp Creole over White Rice; Big Uns Barbeque - Smoked Ham and Smoked Turkey; Bojangles -Home-style Chicken Tenders and Dirty Rice; Bub-Ba-Q -Chopped Chicken and One Rib Bone; Deb’s Bakery and Gifts - Strawberry Cake and Petit Fours; Dos Margaritas - Cheese Dip/Grilled Chicken Quesadilla; Dough Boys Cakes and Catering - Chicken Salad/Cupcakes; Fuego - Mexican specialties; Last Catch - Crab Dip/Shrimp and Grits; Mary’s Bread Basket - Gluten-free desserts; Meg’s -Pork Tenderloin and Sweet Potato Cobbler; Originals to Remember - Chocolate and Butter Cupcakes; Peking Garden -Asian specialties; Papa John’s -Assorted Pizzas; Starbucks -Coffees; Subway - Small Subs; The Tavern at Wolfscratch -Mini-truffle Egg Salad Sandwiches and Mini-truffle Chicken Tarragon Sandwiches; The Clubhouse at Big Canoe - Pork Wonton, Beef Wonton, Cheese Wonton.

Don’t be turned away

Grousing gourmets have been turned away in the past when the event sold out. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Time is short though, as Taste of Pickens takes place this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the big hall at Chattahoochee Tech.  Advance tickets are available at Bank of North Georgia, The Carriage House, Chamber of Commerce, Community Banks of Pickens County, Deb’s Bakery, Foothills IGA, Jasper Drugs, Renasant Bank or from any CARES Board member or at CARES.

Each $10 ticket entitles the bearer to eight selections from over 20 luscious choices of salads, sandwiches, entrees, pastries or desserts. Kroger will once again provide free soft drinks and Starbucks will sell exotic coffees. As a gift to all attendees, Bodacious Food Company will offer free samples of their famous cheese straws. Although plenty of comfortable tables and chairs are available, take-out boxes will be available for $1. There is plenty of free parking and handicapped access.

Dine well to prevent hunger

Not only will attendees enjoy savory samplings, but they’ll  have the satisfaction of knowing their ticket helped feed the hungry in Pickens County.  All profits from Taste of Pickens go directly to  Pickens County’s food pantry, CARES, a non-profit 501 (c)3 corporation.

In addition, this year debuts the Holiday Bazaar and Booth Decorating Competition. Proceeds from table rentals will go to CARES, North Georgia Pregnancy Center and Strive to Thrive, helping single parents stay in school.

It’s not too late for artists or craftsmen to join in the Holiday Bazaar area or for restaurants to decorate their booths for Thanksgiving. Call 770-598-8525 for information. It’s not too late to participate. And it’s not too late to buy tickets (see locations). And it’s never to late to enjoy the food and fun of meeting new friends and old at the 7th Annual Taste of Pickens.
