Bennie Brooks

Bennie Lucille Brooks, 89, of Jasper, Georgia passed away February 1, 2019 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Maryville, Tennessee.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Mark Duncan of Jasper; Denise and Duane Buckles of Maryville, Tennessee; grandchildren, David  and Amanda Duncan of Jasper; Danny and Cheryl Duncan of Jasper; Teresa and Eric Dyer of Jasper, Fonda Roper of Ball Ground; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Martha Davis of Jasper; Lucy Vandoran of Woodstock; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her husband, Grover James Brooks; and sons, James Brooks and Alan Brooks.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 4, 2019 at Corinth Baptist Church with Reverend Richie Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Corinth Baptist Church or The American Alzheimer's Association. (

Lori Fowler

Lori Ann Fowler, 48, of Tate passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at her home.

She is survived by her husband, David Fowler of Tate; son, Steven Jones of Tate; daughter, Deann McPhail of South Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Tiffany Brooks of Nelson; sister and brother-in-law, Tina and Tony Taylor of Spring Field Tennessee; brother and sister-in-law, Richie and Tammi Walker of Philadelphia, Tennessee; brother, Jerry Jones of Baldwin, Michigan; grandchildren, Heaven Brooks, Sam Fowler, Patience McPhail; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hugh and Hollie Fowler; sister-in-law, Greta Black; brother-in-law, Ernest Rutledge. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Fowler is preceded in death by her mother and father, Florence Walker and Jerry D. Jones.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 6, 2019 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Mr. Randy Walker officiating.

She will remain in the care of the Staff of Roper Funeral Home as she is cremated.

Winfred England

December 12, 1938 - February 1, 2019

U.S. Veteran

A most selfless person, Winfred Leon England passed on February 1st at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia following a brief illness. 

He was born December 12, 1938 to S.V. and Maudella England in Gainesville, Georgia. 

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Turner England of Tate, Georgia; sisters, Louise Morrison and Irene England, both of Gainesville, Georgia; nephew, Thor (Lee Ann) Morrison of Richmond, Kentucky; great nephews, Jim and Tom Morrison of Richmond, Kentucky; great niece, Anne Morrison of Richmond, Kentucky; stepsons, David (Allison) and Matthew Duckett; and four step grandchildren, Kaylan, Dakota, Jackson and Skylar Rose Duckett. 

Winfred is preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law Charles Rupert and Jeanette Turner of Jasper Georgia, and his brother-in-law, Jim Morrison of Gainesville, Georgia. 

After graduation from Gainesville High School in 1957, Winfred went on to North Georgia College and into the U.S. Army from there. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone during the Cuban crisis and served in communications. It was here that his interest in technology began. After military service, he completed certifications and coursework at DeVry Technical School that served as the foundation for his lifelong career in recreational gaming. Over the many years and ever-changing technologies, he would own and operate gaming centers in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. 

Winfred led his life as a Christian man from his young years as a member of Central Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, step father, brother, uncle and grand pa.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 3rd at Cagle Funeral Home in Jasper. Rev. Alfred Rickett and Thor Morrison officiated. Interment was held Wednesday, February 6 at 9 a.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations to Cagle Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.

Genevieve Monroe

December 27, 1977 - January 25, 2019


Mrs. Genevieve Duran Monroe, 41, of Ellijay, GA passed away Friday, January 25, 2019 at her residence.

Gena, is survived by her mother, Rita Wallace; father, Joe Beale; step-dad, Bob Wallace; sons, Austin Bowden of Pooler, GA, Rylin Duran of Cartersville, Ga., Andy Wallace of Jasper, Ga., Brennen Monroe of Cartersville, Ga;  daughters, Farren Barnette of Cartersville, Abby Monroe of Talking Rock and Zhoie Duran of Talking Rock; sister and brother-in-law, Joleen and Brian Wood of Talking Rock; and sister, Destini Beale of Tate; step-sister, Amy Costner of Waleska.

Gena was to have her first grand-baby in July, his name will be Maverick Shutts.

Mrs. Monroe was preceded in death by her brother, Christopher Wallace of Jasper; son, Kaegan Fewell and daughter, Hope Fewell.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 1, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the Cagle Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jimmy Huggins officiating.

The family accepted flowers or donations can be made to Cagle Funeral Home to help with Funeral Expenses.

Pearl Mullinax

August 14, 1925 - February 2, 2019


Mrs. Pearl Higgins Mullinax, 93, of Tate, GA passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at The Georgian Lakeside Assisted Living  in Roswell, GA.

Mrs. Mullinax is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Max McBrayer, Jr of Alpharetta, GA. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Heather Cooke, Hilary Baylor and Evan McBrayer; six great-grandchildren, Jackson Cooke, Jakob  Cooke, Bryson Baylor, Brady Baylor, Owen McBrayer, and Abigail McBrayer. 

Mrs. Mullinax is preceded in death by her husband, Olin D. Mullinax.

A graveside service was held February 5th at 11 a.m. at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Deacon Kevin Tracy  officiated.

Karen Lordo


Karen P. Lordo, loving wife and devoted mother, passed away unexpectedly February 4, 2019 at the age of 70. 

Karen is survived by her husband of 48 years, Charles D. Lordo; her children, daughter, Leigh Ann DiPuma, son, Michael Lordo, son-in-law, Tom DiPuma, and daughter-in-law, Adrianne Lordo; her five beloved grandchildren, Christopher DiPuma, Nicholas DiPuma, Emma DiPuma, Alexander Lordo, and Trevor Lordo; as well as parents Donna Phillips and James Phillips; and siblings Jimmy Phillips and Jan Phillips. 

Karen was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania on September 16, 1948. Her entire life was dedicated to taking care of others. She spent her career as a registered nurse and a full-time mom. Karen and Chuck recently returned to the North Georgia mountains which held a special place in Karen's heart. Karen was a special lady who touched the lives of so many, and she will be missed beyond words. 

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Roper Funeral Home at 2 p.m., February 8, 2019 with interment following at Lake Forest Memorial Park. The family will be receiving friends beginning at noon.

Susanne Newell

Susanne Sparkman Newell, of Big Canoe, Georgia, passed away on February 4, 2019, from complications with Parkinson’s Disease.  She was born in Tampa, Florida, on July 14, 1943.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Bascom and Eleanor Sparkman.  

Susanne was an art teacher for the Fulton County School System and she retired as the vice principal of Esther Jackson Elementary in Roswell, Georgia.  She loved her students and her painting.  

Susanne received her doctorate in Art Education from the University of Georgia.  She spent many summers abroad studying art and painting with various techniques and mediums.  She was an accomplished painter well known for the beauty of her paintings.  She especially enjoyed painting with her friends at Big Canoe and the Blackberry Creek artists group.  

Susanne is survived by her husband, Robert, and stepdaughters, Lisa Jackson and her husband, Sean, and their four children, Brendan, Brooke, Anna Claire and Brody; and Laura Mokhiber and her husband Jason and their daughters Olivia and Presley; as well as many cousins and friends.  She will be greatly missed by all.

There will be a memorial service, Tuesday, February 12 at 2 p.m. at Big Canoe Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in the name of Susanne Newell to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

William Jones Jr.


William Harrison Jones Jr.,  age 84 of Jasper passed away Monday, February 4, 2019 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.  He was preceded in death by his father, William Harrison Jones Sr.; his mother, Addie Lou Godfrey Jones; and his wife, Mary Louise Caylor Jones.

Survivors include his stepdaughter, Pat Boutwell of Jasper; stepson, Charles Ray of Jasper; sister, Peggy Petty of Jasper; sister, Cordia Byers of Jasper; step-granddaughter, Becky Lee; step-grandsons, Dalton Boutwell, Stephen Ray, Tommy Ray Jr., Matthew Dunn; great-grandchildren, Steel Ray, Dominique Ray, Charles Lee Ray, Maddox Ray, Tucker Ray.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Johnny Hollingshead officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, February 6 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday, February 7 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
