Barbara Grabiel


Barbara Ross Grabiel, 85, of Jasper passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at her residence following an extended illness.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Grabiel and her daughter, Patsy Lowe. 

She is a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Jasper, Georgia. 

Surviving are her children, Dianne and Robert Gagnon of Cumming, Debby Eckhardt of Jasper, Thomas and Carolyn Grabiel of California, and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Dawsonville.   Pastor Don Bankhead will officiate.

Gladys Snider


Gladys Snider, 92, Jasper GA, died Tuesday September 25, 2018 at Serenity/Sonshine Mountain Manor after a long illness.

Gladys was born near Olive Hill, KY on March 8, 1926 to the late Ralph and Dora (Erwin) Fannin. She married Donald E. Snider on June 30, 1947, who preceded her in death on February 6, 2010.

Gladys lived most of her life in Mansfield, Ohio followed by several years in Ashland OH. Gladys and her husband were members of the Ashland Church of Christ.  She moved to Jasper GA after the death of her husband to live with her son and daughter-in-law. She then became an active member of Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Jasper GA and was a weekly volunteer at the Community Thrift Store in Jasper GA.  Prior to retiring, Gladys was a hostess at Perkins Family Restaurant in Ashland Ohio for 39 years.

Gladys is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David and Carol Snider, of Jasper GA, two grandchildren Tracy (Randy) Oehling of Manassas VA and Chad (Kelly) Snider of West Salem OH, two great grandchildren Heather Timmons and Ryan Oehling, and one sister Loraine McFadden of Ashland OH, and three nieces and one nephew.

In addition to her  husband Donald, Gladys was preceded in death by her sister, Madge Byrd.

Friends called Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 pm at Heyl Funeral Home, 227 Broad Street, Ashland OH. Funeral services were held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Ashland Church of Christ, 1185 Co Rd 1356 with Pastor Tim Nowlin officiating. Graveside services followed at Mansfield Memorial Park, Mansfield.

Brenda Barnes


Brenda Gayton Barnes, 69, of Morganton, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. 

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Gayton officiating. Interment  followed in the McHelen Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Brenda was a member of McHelen Baptist Church and retired from childcare. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, shopping, laughing and having a good time. Brenda loved spending time with her family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Barnes and Parents, Rev. James and Dot Gayton; survivors include her children, Andrea Brooks (Blake) and Sharon Barnes; grandchildren, Alexis Brooks and Brett Brooks; siblings, Wayne Gayton (Patricia) and Myra Gayton (Frank DeLoach); honorary sister, Joyce Strickland; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jess Keel


Lieutenant Colonel Jess William Keel, of Nicholson, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, from complications from a bone marrow transplant after a seven-month battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Jess was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 30, 1970 to Doug and Jane Darnell Keel. Jess was married to his wife of almost 15 years Rana Cole Keel. Jess grew up in Decatur, Georgia and was a 1988 Graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1992 with emphasis in Aviation from Georgia State University. He then graduated from Officer Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and attended Undergraduate Pilot Training in 1995 where he received his wings at Vance Air Force Base. His first assignment out of UPT was flying the C-5 aircraft out of Dover, Delaware. In 1997 he joined the 700th Airlift Squadron, 94th Airlift Wing, at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia, flying the C-130 aircraft. Over the course of his career in the 94th Airlift Wing, Lt Col Keel served as an Aircraft Commander, Supervisor of Flying, Drop Zone Control Officer, Instructor Pilot, Chief of Operations Plans and Chief of Tactics. He also served a significant role as Director of Operations for the 700th Airlift Squadron on one of his multiple deployments to the Middle East in the global war on terror. He amassed over 3500 hours military flying time and 100+ hours of combat flight time earning an Aerial Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Medal, among other awards and decorations. In 2016 he began service as an Air Force Academy Liaison Officer helping young men and women fulfill their goal to attend the United States Air Force Academy. In addition to his service with United States Air Force he received his MBA from Kennesaw State in 2002 and was also a commercial pilot for Southwest Airlines since 2005.  

Jess loved riding motorcycles and snowboarding. He was an avid tennis player and played A level tennis for Alta and 4.5 for USTA, and was the 2013 Fall Atlanta City Champion at singles. He was described as “competitive but fair and generous to opponents.” His favorite past time was spending time on his farm in Nicholson with his wife Rana, their dogs, horses and pig Gilbert.  He lived life to the fullest, was big hearted, tender, loving, generous and hysterically funny. He was genuinely loved by all who knew him and he was quite simply the best little brother in the world. 

He is preceded in death by his father, Douglas Keel; sister, Linda Harris; grandparents Syrus and Nacie Darnell. He is survived by his wife Rana, mother Jane Darnell Keel, sister Shannon Keel Cartrett, brother-in-law, Chris Cartrett and also his niece and nephew Keely and Jake Cartrett. He is also survived by an older brother Larry Keel and nieces and nephews Blake Maddox, Brooke Douglas, Chris Keel and Amanda Madge in addition to several great nieces, nephews and many cousins. A memorial service to honor him will be held Friday, October 5 at 3 at Cornerstone Church in Athens, Georgia. The family will receive guests one hour before the service and also after. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Top Dogg K9 Foundation at This organization partners dogs with veterans who are suffering from trauma from service to our country. Also, donations can be made in Jess’ name to The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation at John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies…..”

Lenore Justice

March 14, 1933 –

Lenore Evelyn Justice, 85, of Jasper passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 at her home.

She was born March 14, 1933 to Orin and Thelma Burgan in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Tom Liberatore of Monument Falls; sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Linda Justice of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ken and Sara Justice of Jasper, Mark and Glennie Justice of Noblesville, Indiana; grandchildren, Daniel and Irene Liberatore of Blairsville, Chris and Brittany Liberatore of Lula, Kristen Justice of Omaha, Nebraska, Allison Thompson of Noblesville, Indiana, Eric and Dorian Justice of Iron Mountain, Michigan; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Justice; granddaughter, Angela Justice; great-grandson, Jackson Liberatore.

Mrs. Justice will remain in the care of the staff of Roper Funeral Home as she is cremated.

Margaret Allen


Margaret Allen, 77, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  She was born May 18, 1941 to Rembert and Della Parker in Jasper, Georgia.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Donald Allen and Grady Sue Allen; grandchildren, Kelly and Brian Fendley of Blairsville, Katy Saunders of Blue Ridge; great-grandchildren, Addi Kate and Krosby; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and J.I. Hyde of Jasper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Buck and Ruth Parker of Jasper, William and Marie Parker of Canton, Bobby and Teresa Parker of Talking Rock.  Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Jessie Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 3  at Salem Baptist Church with Reverend Alan Caylor and Reverend Adam Parker officiating.  The interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
