Obituaries for June 21, 2018; Susan Brown, James Cavender, Rodney Gibson, Edna Gibson

 Susan Brown

Susan Mitchell Brown, 63, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.  

Survivors include her husband, Benny Biddy of Jasper; son, Matthew Brown and Sabrina Starnaman of Dallas, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Danny Tesney.  Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.  She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Brown.

A memorial service was held at 12 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.  


James Cavender

James Harry Cavender, 85, of Ball Ground, Georgia passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Northside Hospital Cherokee.  

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Betty Cavender of Ball Ground; son, Kenneth Cavender of Cumming; daughter, Annette Cavender of Ball Ground; grandchildren, Eric and Stephanie Cavender of Conifer, Colorado and Kristen Cavender of Cumming.  Several other relatives also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Cavender.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the Roper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Horris Biddy officiating.  Interment followed in the Sharp Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery at 7168 Ball Ground Highway; Ball Ground, GA 30107.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Rodney Gibson

July 9, 1947 – June 16, 2018


Honorable D. Rodney Gibson, 70, of Jasper, GA passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at his home. He was born July 9, 1947 in Tate, GA to the late Allie and Ermie Gibson. Rodney served as Probate Judge of Pickens County for 36 years and was currently serving as Senior Judge for Probate Courts of Georgia. After he retired as Pickens County Probate Judge Rodney still wanted to help his community, so he went to work at Roper Funeral Home.

Rodney is survived by his wife, Lois Gibson of Jasper; children, Alan and Teri Gibson, of Marietta, Amy Gibson and Jason Bivens, of Jasper, Jeffrey and Jenny Jones, of Jasper; son-in-law, Keith Galligan of Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Mildred Gibson, of Jasper; grandchildren, Micah, Ellie, Owen, Eli, Brady, Evan, Tatum, Stella, and Caroline; and numerous adopted family members from the community, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Galligan.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Jasper United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Meadows, Rev. Gene Tatum, Allen Wigington, Alan Gibson and Rev. Philip McPherson officiating. Internment will follow in Lake Forest Memorial Park with Blaine Lodge #534 in charge of Masonic Graveside Services.

The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The family request in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Pickens Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 45, Jasper, GA 30143 or Masonic Children’s Home of Georgia, P.O. Box 4183, Macon, GA 31208 in Rodney’s memory.

Edna Gibson

January 08, 1926 - June 16, 2018


Mrs. Edna Gibson, 92, of Jasper passed away Saturday, June 16 at her residence. 

Mrs. Gibson is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby & Joyce Gibson of Dawsonville and Jeff & Teri Gibson of Talking Rock; son, Jim Gibson of Yellow Creek; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue & Lindsay Petty of Marble Hill and Ann & Joe Clark of Jasper; daughter, Oma Tribble of Cumming; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. 

Mrs. Edna is preceded in death by her husband, James F. Gibson; son, Alvin Gibson and daughter, Peggy Gibson. 

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2018 at Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Buck Parker officiating. 

Pallbearers: Jon Stine, Greg Gibson, Tony Gibson, Nathaniel Petty, Brian Poole and Gerald Gibson.

Honorary Pallbearers: Wes Clark, Cooper Poole and Scotty Forrest Holbert. 

The family accepted flowers or donate to the Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
