Juanita Ellgass

1928 – 2018


Juanita H. Ellgass passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018.  She was born January 29, 1928 in Tate, Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late George Washington Harbin and Loma Wood Harbin.  

Juanita earned her degree at Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse and First Lieutenant, USAF. She practiced her Christian faith at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Jasper. She was married to her late husband, Lawrence J. Ellgass, Sr., for 59 years.  

Survivors include her loving children, Lawrence J. Ellgass, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN; Barbara Dailey (Husband – John) of Woodstock, GA; Robert Ellgass of Acworth, GA; David Ellgass (Wife – Sherri) of Warner Robbins, GA; Jeanne Fernandez (Husband – Jim) of Marietta, GA.  She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Harbin Cox and brothers, George Harbin and Wallace Potts.  She also survived her nephew, Charles Cox. 

Funeral mass was held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Jasper. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation ( or the American Heart Association (

Minnie Cooper

Minnie West Cooper, 87, of Canton, GA passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Canton Nursing Center. Mrs. Cooper was from North Carolina but has been in Georgia for 54 years. She enjoyed flowers and spending time with her family.  

A memorial service will be held at a later date. 

She was preceded in death by her husband,  Cadell Cooper.

Survivors include, daughters, Dian West (David) Driskell, Honey (Steve) Davis; son, Douglas Keith (Mary) West; brother, John Campbell; granddaughters, Cassandra Law and Christina West; grandsons, Chad Cawley; Ian Davis and Walker Davis. Numerous great- grandchildren also survive.

Gene Childers

Gene Childers, 88, of Canton, GA passed away Friday, April 27, 2018 at his residence. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Monday, April 30, 2018, from the Burnt Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Buck Parker, Rev. Jerry Sims and Rev. Jason Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper. 

He was preceded in death by his parents,  Arthur Lee and Beatrice Childers;  son,  Frank Childers;  brother,  Alfred Childers;  sister,  Willie Bea McCurley.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years,  Jewel Childers;

daughter, Diane (James) Morris; son, Johnny Childers; brother, Leroy Childers; grandsons, William Childers, Michael Morris, Matthew (Tammy) Morris; granddaughter, Crystal (Corky) Ingalls; grandson, Colt (Lisa) Childers;  granddaughter, Miranda (Shane) Townley; great-grandsons,  Caleb Childers, Justin Morris, Logan Childers, Isaac Ingalls, Ethan Ingalls, Carson Townley, Asher Ingalls; great-granddaughter, Chloe Townley. Several nieces and nephews also survive

Chris Thompson

Chris Anthony Thompson,  55, of Ball Ground, Georgia passed away Monday, May 21, 2018.  

Survivors include his  wife, Nona Louise Thompson of Dawsonville; mother, Doris Clay of Jasper; brothers, Clint Thompson of Cartersville, Marvin Thompson of Canton, Scotty Godfrey of Jasper, Ray Godfrey of Jasper, Billy Cole Godfrey of Cumming; grandchildren, Rocky Suddeth of Dawsonville, Ricky Suddeth of Dawsonville, Tyla Echuck of Jasper, Colleen Echuck of Athens; stepchildren, Rodney Suddeth of Dawsonville, Chuck Suddeth of Dawsonville, and Tracy Echuck of Dawsonville.  Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Clyde Boling officiating.  Interment followed in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery: Hwy. 372, Ball Ground, GA 30107.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.  

Marvin Roberts Jr.

L. Marvin Roberts, Jr., retired owner of North Side Pharmacy, Inc., in Atlanta, GA, passed into glory on May 26, 2018 at the age of 90. 

Marvin was born in Atlanta on April 15, 1928 to L. Marvin Roberts, Sr. and Martha Middlebrooks Roberts. He graduated from North Fulton High School, attended Emory for two years, and graduated from Southern College of Pharmacy (now Mercer) in 1950. He married Caroline Hodges in 1949 and they were blessed with four children. Upon retirement in 1994 he and Caroline moved to Bent Tree in Jasper, GA, where he enjoyed his favorite hobby of fishing. 

He was an active member of Fellowship Presbyterian Church, where he participated in men’s Bible studies and helped maintain the grounds. He was also an active volunteer for several charities in Jasper.

He was preceded in death by Caroline, his devoted wife of 66 years, and his grandson David Benjamin Hawkins. He is survived by his children, Virginia Kinman and husband, Lowe, Kathy Hawkins and husband, Jay, Elizabeth Ann Roberts, and Paul Roberts and wife, Leah; grandchildren Jason (Allison) Hawkins, Mary Beth Kinman, Taylor (Ashleigh) Roberts and Travis Roberts; great grandchildren Benjamin and Patton Hawkins; brother Eugene T. Roberts, brother-in-law Sam N. Hodges and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Jasper, GA.

David Howard

Mr. David Howard, 46, of Kingston, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Waleska Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor Dottie Williams officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Kristie Howard; mother and stepfather, Julie Degnan and Paul E. Degnan, II; siblings, Doyle Simmons and Julie Duffield; nephews, Christopher Howard and Kevin Howard.
