Obituaries for April 26, 2018: John Barmeyer, Stacey Tibbitts, Doug Blackwell, Dorothy Andrews, Jerry Stanfield, Billy Hales, Rebecca Mathis, Roy Cannady, Paul Reeves

John Barmeyer

John Robert Barmeyer, 71, of Jasper, Georgia, died on April 18, 2018, surrounded by loving family. He was born May 30, 1946 in Flushing, NY, to George and Dorothy Dayton Barmeyer.  His father, a pediatrician, and his mother, a homemaker and artist, moved shortly after his birth to Missoula, MT, where John and his three sisters grew up.  He worked on ranches in the summers, spent his junior year of high school in Australia as an American Field Service exchange student, was on Missoula's Hellgate High School championship football team, fought forest fires with the U.S. Forest Service, and began his life-long passion for fishing and hiking.

He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and of Harvard Law School. After serving as a law clerk for Judge Elbert Tuttle on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, he began private practice in Atlanta and then served as general counsel for MARTA during the time of its most significant construction. He later served as general counsel of ING North America Financial Services (now Voya). After retirement he moved to Pickens County, where he created a homestead to welcome his extended family.

John was a great wordsmith and regaled his children and grandchildren with his ability to compose a pun on any topic, without prior notice or warning. He had a particular penchant for inventing nicknames and nonsense words for anybody and anything that mattered to him.

John collected and cherished vintage acoustic guitars. He loved to admire the beauty of the instruments, noting the distinctive sound and smell of each one. He said each old guitar tried to tell its story and he wanted those stories to be heard. He recently established a music scholarship, accompanied by the gift of several vintage guitars, at the School of Performing Arts at Reinhardt University, with the express direction that the guitars should be played and enjoyed. He also gave several historically significant guitars to the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD.

He is survived by his wife, Anda Olsen; his children Wilson Barmeyer (Sarah) of Washington, D.C. and Mary Logan Bikoff (David) and their mother, his first wife, Patricia Thrower Barmeyer, all of Atlanta; step-children Ara Jones (Carrie), Kyle Olsen (Jessica), Jama Lee Olsen (John Pearce), and Leif Olsen (Lulu Gyoury). He is also survived by his grandchildren Tinsley Gray Barmeyer, Margot James Barmeyer and John Wolf Bikoff; and his step-grandchildren Lucas Olsen; Aiden and Cash Jones; Lanier, June and John Lee Olsen-Pearce; and honorary grandchildren Zack and Josie Moore and Josey Frazier Bland. John’s sisters Barbara Barmeyer, Mary O'Brien (Dan), and Susan Barmeyer Haber (Jon), all of Montana, also survive him, as do his many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Waleska United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 21st at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John R. and Anda Olsen Barmeyer Scholarship Endowment at Reinhardt University, 7300 Reinhardt Circle, Waleska, GA 30183.

Card of Thanks

I would like to take this time to thank the EMTs and fire department for coming to Fatz on the 10th when I had a grand mal seizure. I was scared, my friends and co-workers were scared and you all gave me the appropriate care to ease everyone.

Sometimes - many times - the work you do is so under appreciated. I just want you all to know I am glad you were there for me.

Thanks for all you do for our community.
