"We made an honest mistake within the scientific framing of the debate, and we've got to correct it to make it right," said Steven P. Hamburg, chief scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and one of the paper's authors.
When calculating the greenhouse-gas emissions limit, government officials in the United States, Europe and elsewhere do not count the carbon that biofuels release when they are burned. But carbon is released when a producer clears and burns trees, even to grow a crop destined for the biofuels market. Officials also established a legal system that limits emissions from energy use but not from land-use activities such as clearing forests.
In recent months, researchers have begun to worry that bioenergy crops could replace the world's forests and savannahs on a huge scale unless climate policies start to take full account of how these crops' production affects greenhouse-gas concentrations. None of the major climate regimes -- including the Kyoto Protocol, the European Union's carbon market and the House-passed climate bill -- account for the carbon released by changing land use for biofuels.
"If you only count part of the carbon, you set up a set of incentives that are all wrong," said Jae Edmonds, a chief scientist at the Energy Department's Pacific Northwest Laboratory.

Global warming, one of my favorite false emergencies. Remember when it used to be called Global Cooling in the 70’s, then in the 90’s a sun spot larger than the size of the earth disappeared, and the earth warmed again. Talk about “the sky is falling”. Then the Al Gore’s screamed we now have global warming. Uh oh… global temperatures have actually been falling for the past 11 years. Better call it “Climate Change” now.
And you better not disagree! Lest you be called a “denier”. Ellen Goodman of the Boston Globe even wrote, “Global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers. Though one denies the past and the other denies the present and future”. Climate change is a progressive money-maker. Just wait for Copenhagen and Cap and Tax. It is also a scam to bring about social justice. Van Jones knew that. He planned to use the green movement and climate change to bring about social justice.
Almost all the science out there on climate change is flawed or phony. But people drink the Kool Ade and buy into it for the sake of political correctness. In 2007, Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus claimed that “the biggest threat to freedom, democracy, the market economy and prosperity at the beginning of the 21st century is not communism or its various softer variants,” but “the threat of ambitious environmentalism.”
I’ll give the progressives a nod too, Christine Stewart, former Canada environment minister said, “Climate change provides the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world. No matter if the science is all phony, there are still collateral benefits.”
Here is Stephen Schneider 2007 UN IPCC report author and climate change alarmist: “To capture the public imagination, we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention of any doubts one might have. Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.” This guy also authored the UN report in the 70’s that led to the global cooling scare.
Did you environmental nuts know that China is completely exempt from the Kyoto Protocol, yet they build new coal plants on a weekly basis and are the world’s highest emitter of CO2? Don’t worry. Even though over the last 100 years the global temp has shown a net increase of .74 degrees Celsius (margin of error +- .18 degree!) the US will carry the burden in Copenhagen this year. Since Obama received so much money from environmental special interests since 2000, he owes it to his backers to open up the treasury to 3rd world countries (Libya, Iran, Congo, and Venezuela, for example) to pay for our evil, wasteful ways.

Its seems that Al Gore's polar bears ( who were supposed to be dissapearing because of global warming ) have procreated to such hugh numbers that many coastal cities in Alaska now consider them to be pests , breaking into houses and cars looking for food and otherwise destroying public property . Next , from a report on c-span , even IF the United States had none , read ZERO , pollution emmisions , the countries of China and India are putting out more pollution than we ever will , and they have NO plans to change their ways . Even Brazil , who is burning hundreds of square miles of rain forest EACH day , is putting out hugh amounts of pollution . But even with all that pollution , most scientist have found NO proof this has had any effect on global warming , saying the earth is just going through a normal cycle . Last night NASA reported Mars is going through the same cooling/warming cycle as earth and as far as they can tell , Mars has NO pollution . Well , maybe Pinto Bean left a few candy wrappers in a crater when he left , but other than that , no pollution found by either of the rovers . Just saying !

I hope Obama will sign the Copenhagen agreement, which would signal a start to address climate change. But chances are it will derailed as big business and big coal are adamantly opposed to it and using the typical scare tactics.
Ever wonder what keeps bringing you climate change denying zombies to life? It’s a toxic blend of ideology and money. Mostly money. The same well-funded movement that spent so long delaying regulations on tobacco is still out there, busy polluting public discussion with fear, uncertainty, and doubt about climate change. They do it knowingly, and they profit from it.
This is a huge issue, but it shouldn't be. Most industries that have worked to address CO2 releases on their own have found a substantial increase in efficiency and financial savings. Furthermore, there has been a ton of progress in slowing emissions from industries themselves that are progressive enough to address the pollution themselves instead of throwing their money into lobbying against having to do the right thing.
As an example note which car companies are doing well and which are begging Uncle Sam for a bailout. Those that failed to improve gas milage prefering to spend their time and money whining about regulations are the ones that the taxpayers are now supporting so they can keep on with the gas guzzlers. Same thing with industry. Southern Company whining for government money, spending a ton on lobbyist and fewer regulations instead of just improving their production in the first place.

Thank God, I thought we were going to have to endure less joblessness and better bang for the dollar. This is proof that the thing didn’t work. Spending from the Porkulus Bill is at about 17%. The white house says we have gotten all there is out of the stimulus. So what was it for? It was for spending. Period. Mostly for the unions and to ensure the democrats get re-elected.

How was the Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1962(for example) not an act of war against Cuba since we provided US support, personel and materials? If the US were invaded by Cuba like that we would have bombed them off the map.
I am not against my country but I am against people, like yourself, who are walking around ignorant to documented truth as can be found outside snopes, yahoo and aol webpages. If you were to read beyond the softsoap textbooks of today and look at original (photocopies of the originals) documents at the national archives, you would be surprised at how history has been shaped by the US to waht Washington wants and not what the people want.

I think some of your postings go to the extreme end of the spectrum sometimes, but at least you inject humor with statements that obviously are meant to rattle somebodies chains. These other so called knowledgeable people are only capable of cutting and pasting articles from the National Review before they even check the authenticty of the lies they are repeating. I certainly am surprised by some of the comments that have been made reference my finances. A person claiming to be a Viet Nam Veteran, and I do mean claiming, all a person has to do is type and they apparently can be anything. I doubt they ever served in a uniform much less Viet Nam given the accusation that I live off of others. Here is some more of my life's story. I served in uniform, active duty, not reserves or National Guard, not just on weekends and 2 weeks every summer, but active duty for over 20 years. I was medically retired, not without a fight I might add, because of spinal injuries I received while serving my country and the United States Army. I was told I was no longer fit for service because I was no longer eligible for combat duty and "medicaly retired". I had no say in the matter. None. Since my forced retirement I have undergone operations to repair my right shoulder, right wrist, left elbow, and 2 more spinal surgeries to stabilize my condition. I have endured many, many, hours of indescrible torture called "physical therapy" to be to the point I can live a somewhat normal life. I have plates and screws and various other types of added hardware that I was not born with., and someone claiming to being a Viet Nam Veteran says I am living on handouts. I earned not only my retirement but the disability compensation I receive.
On another matter reference the posting by this person CLAIMING to be a Viet Nam Veteran, I worked until November of last year when I got layed off. While in the military among other technical jobs I excelled at was Nuclear and Chemical Munitions. I underwent some of the most strigent security requirments and psychological examinations known. I also held a Secret clearance with all agency checks, ENTNAC, NAC, FBI, state and federal. Background investigations included talking to former teachers, neighbors, friends, and employers. Every time I even took an aspirin it was reported thru the chain of command. I was under both the Nuclear and Chemical Surety Program requirements in accordance with Federal Law and DOD. And some back country ignoramasses want to say I am unbalanced because I don't sweet talk and tact is not my forte'. About 30 days prior to my forced retirement date, I was contacted by a "company" out of Alexandria Virginia and asked to go to a country in the Persian Gulf area as soon as possible after my retirement date. They came to me. Not vice-versa. Exactly 10 days after my forced retirement I landed in the middle east. I worked as a "civilian contractor" until I sustained another injury that required my right leg to be re-assembled. I must say the money as a contractor was much better than that of a soldier. I also worked as a warehouse manager, a truck driver, a roofing estimater and a pneumatic tool repairman since I retired. The job I had that I got laid off at was as a maintenance man at a boarding kennal in Jasper. You know what maintenance men do in dog kennals? They shovel dog shit and pressure wash the pens. If you haven't figured out where this is going yet, your pretty slow. Just because someone may be qualified to do a job they prefer and "don't want to work at McDonalds", a person that is willing to work, there is work for them. The prima donna's that want to sit back and falsely claim there is no work are for the most part, full of crap. You have to want to work and you have to be willing to work at what is available not what you may want. Just because I have experience in Nuclear and Chemical Munitions, doesn't mean I can sit back on my ass, collect unemployment until it is no longer available, and cry about no work. There is work. You just have to be willing to work. There was a time in this country when people did what they had to do. I never changed. I do what I have to do, not cry about my circumstances and whine like a little puss.
As an after thought, not that it is anyones business, I continued to work because I wanted to, not because it was necessary. It was only necessary if I wanted a life for my wife and myself and not just an existance. We are not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but our bills are paid and nobody is beating down the door looking for owed money. If I was looking for a handout, I am fairly certain I would also qualify for social security disability benefits if I were to file. I have not filed because I don't need it. I could use it for sure. But I don't need it. Someone else just might and if I have it and don't need it, it might not be available to them. I'm fairly certain some of the same posters squawking about others living off of handouts, took early retirement for social security benefits. Hell full retirement age isnt until about 72. Everyone collecting social security benefits must be living on handouts because they can work until 72 at least. Pretty ridiculous for someone to claim. People collecting benefits that they qualify for, is not living off of handouts. Regardless what some screwball has to say.

Rob,NamVet...remember when it was an embarrassment to live off the system. Now people proudly whip out their government debit card to pay for their steaks and brag how they are not claiming all their income so their children can eat free at lunch. And of course if you want to have babies...no problem. That's what medicaid and WIC are for. And have you seen some of the new government-subsidized housing...pretty nice, some are even gated. Sad that many people can live a better life at the tax-payers expense than if they actually tried to do it on their own. Yes Folks....this is what BIG Government does. Punishes the rich and rewards the poor.
