Anne M. Spitznagel
    Anne M. Spitznagel was a long term resident of Atlanta, Jasper, Ga., and Chapel Hill, N.C., until she died on Nov. 20, 2012. She was 89 years old.        Anne is survived by John, her husband of 65 years; their five children, John Jr. (Jack) Spitznagel (Susie), Jean Hetherington (Seth), Margaret Harkness (Donald), Elizabeth Kopin (Alan) and Paul Spitznagel (Kim); and 14 grandchildren.
    Anne was a lifelong Episcopalian, a member of  St. Bartholomews of Atlanta and the Church of the Holy Family of Jasper where she served as a dedicated member of the Vestry and the choir.  Her funeral service was held there at 11 a.m. on Nov. 24.  She was buried in the Memorial Garden of the Church.
    Anne’s education began at PS 69 in Queens, N.Y., and St Agatha’s School for Girls of New York City. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College in New York City, a Nursing degree from the Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing, a Master in Psychology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and the PhD in Education Psychology from Duke University.
    She practiced school psychology and later clinical psychology after moving to Atlanta with John in 1981. She served with Catholic Social Services as a clinical psychologist.  Her private practice in cognitive and family psychology was in Five Forks Trickham, Ga. Anne was a founding member of the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center of Jasper and Pickens County, Ga.
    Anne was compassionate, tender, loving and believed fiercely in social justice for all.   She was deeply loved by all who knew her, and will be sorely missed by her family and her community.

Alice Gabriel
    Mrs. Alice Prasek Gabriel, age 84 of Jasper, Ga., died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
    Born Nov. 9, 1928, in Cleveland, Oh., she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth Prasek. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Tate United Methodist Church.            Alice’s family moved to Winter Park, Fl., when she was a young girl and she graduated from Winter Park High School. She married Milton Gabriel on August 8, 1958. Mr. Gabriel was an Air Force officer stationed at a nearby Orlando Air Force Base. Milton was career military and they were stationed throughout the United States and overseas. After retirement they lived in Texas for 20 years before settling in Jasper in 1998.
    Survivors include her husband, Milton Gabriel, Jasper; daughters, Nancy Sullivan Fish and her companion, John Daldiel, Altoona, Fl., and  Carol Gabriel Tholen (Rudy), Benton, Tn.; grandchildren, Damon, Corey and Brennan Fish, Rachel Marie Cangemi and Christopher Monroe Hatfield; and great-grandchild, Weston Monroe Hatfield. Friends of the family include Wesley Graydon and Cale Quinton.
    A graveside service was held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga., with the Rev. Louise Elmore officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tate United Methodist Church, 5880 Highway 53 East, Tate, Ga. 30177. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory of Jasper.

Benny West
    Mr. Benny L. West, age 70 of Ball Ground, Ga., passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at his residence.
    Survivors include his wife, Brenda West; children, Mosey West, Penny Burrell and Stacy  and Tracy West; step-children, Tina Whaley, Kina Padgett and Michelle Smith; siblings, Shirley Tribble, Barbara Jones, Tommy West, Dub West, Charles West, Joe West and Mark West; and uncle, Edward West. Nineteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins,  in-laws and little dog, Daisy Mae, also survive.
    The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at  Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Russell Murdock and Ryan Goodson officiating.  Interment followed in Macedonia Memorial Park.

Magalean Eller
    Magalean Virginia Eller, age 78 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
    Mrs. Eller was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Alice May Payne Hughes. She was retired from the Diamond Carpet Mills in Dalton, Ga., and was of the Church of God Faith.
    Survivors include her husband, Lamar Eller, Jasper; son, Lee Roy (Joann) Hamby, Chatsworth, Ga.; brother, Charles Hughes, Chatsworth; brother-in-law, Freddy Eller; sisters-in-law, Barbara Wigginton and Shirley Hughes;  grandchildren, Diana Hamby, Teena McCollum and Kristie Rizer; and great-grandchildren, Zachery Norris, Abriana, Colton and Carissa McCollum and Jacob Rizer. A large number of nieces and nephews also survive.
    The funeral service was conducted Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. from the Akins of Copperhill Chapel with the Revs. Chris Lawson and Johnny Fortner officiating. Music was by Kelly Smith. Pallbearers were: Zachery and Eric Norris, Mike, Earl and John Hughes, Dennis and Bobby Johnson and Jacob and Jamie Rizer. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Copperhill, Tn. 

Doc Johnson
    A memorial service for James Denham (Doc) Johnson, age 74 of Newell, Al., formerly of Jasper, Ga., will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. from Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Cosper officiating.
    Mr. Johnson passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington, Ga.
    Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Joyce Cantrell Johnson, Newell; two daughters, Robin Lavallee, Wedowee, and Cindy (Kevin) Watson, Jasper; son, James Gregory (Pam) Johnson, Wedowee; sisters, Joyce Calvert and Betty Jean Rivers, both of Mobile, Rosa Johnson, Marietta, Ga., Helen Strickland, Tifton, Ga., and Mary Nan Bolick, Florida; brothers, Fred A. Johnson, Canton, Ga., Herman Johnson II, Marietta, Ga., and Jimmy Johnson, Crawfordville, Ga.; and grandson, Trae J. Johnson.
    Mr. Johnson was born July 6, 1938, the son of James Herman and Ethel L. Denham Johnson. He was a retired electrician with the Tibbs Group and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Darrel Lee Johnson; and one sister and three brothers.
