School officials, commissioner reach agreement on gymnasiums
$25 hour rental fee, JES gym $16,000
Pending the official go-ahead from members of the board of education, Superintendent Mike Ballew and Commissioner Rob Jones reached an agreement Friday for the county to rent three of the schools' gymnasiums for $25 an hour during recreation basketball season. In addition, the county will pay the school system $16,000 for unlimited use of the old Jasper Elementary School gymnasium for one year.
Ballew issued a statement Friday saying the two sides had considered the recent controversy surrounding recreation basketball, and mutually agreed to adjust the original agreement.
The county and the board of education, pending a final vote at next month's board meeting, agreed the county will rent gyms for $25 an hour and pay $16,000 for the old JES gym. Ballew said he did not know how many hours the gyms would be in use.
"We feel this agreement will be mutually beneficial to both parties and to the kids," Ballew said. "Both entities support the youth and citizens of Pickens County. We believe this revised agreement will allow all parties to move forward.
Ballew said the the agreement falls in line with the recently passed school board facilities policy that established hourly rates to rent all of the schools facilities, including gymnasiums, the fine arts facility and tennis courts, among others.
"I think we're all ready to move forward," Ballew said. |
