In a true town hall meeting, members of the public and sheriff personnel debated and discussed the agency’s 2010 budget for more than two hours Thursday. In the end, Sheriff Donnie Craig said he would do as one speaker suggested, “sharpen your pencil and take one more look at your budget.” Speakers at the meetings were split into two camps. Some said law enforcement needs to be fully supported with better vehicles even if it takes an increase in taxes; others argued that while public safety is a key priority, the sheriff should still cut spending during times of economic downturn.
