Health care reform is on the minds of many these days and that will be the topic of a panel discussion at the September meeting of the North Georgia Progressives on Tuesday, September 22, at Fireside Café. Three Pickens County health care professionals will serve as panelist and will each provide a short presentation of how they see the current healthcare crisis and how their experiences and expertise led them to their views. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations. The panel will include Carole Maddux, Dr. Joseph Wilber, and Dr. John Spitznagel. Maddux holds a master’s degree in Health Care Policy and Administration and has worked in the health care profession since 1994. She served as director with a hospice organization for several years. Maddux also is an ordained Deacon in the Episcopal Church and lives with her husband and two children in Roswell. Dr. Wilber spent 25 years of his career in private practice in Atlanta, specializing in Internal Medicine. His career took a turn to Public Health for the next 10 years and he became Director of the Infectious Disease Program for Georgia. He moved to Jasper for his retirement years and lives here with his wife, Pat, who also is a medical doctor. Dr. Spitznagel earned his medical degree in Internal Medicine from Columbia University and then served in the Army Medical Corps. He was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1957 to1979. He moved to Atlanta in 1980 to serve as Chair of Microbiology and Immunology at the Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Spitznagel taught there until retirement and now serves Emory as Professor Emeritus. He and his wife, Ann, live in Jasper.
