Don Wells, President of the Mountain Stewards, has chosen as one of five finalists for the WSB-TV Channel 2’s Cox Conserves Heroes contest and he needs your help to win $5,000 to continue the work of the Jasper-based 501(C)3. WSB-TV has teamed up with the Trust for Public Land to recognize those who are dedicated to conservation in their everyday life, and the finalist with the most votes cast through WSB-TV’s website will receive $5,000 to go to the non-profit of his or her choice. “To be one of five chosen in the Atlanta Metro area is a big honor,” Wells said. The finalists were selected by a judging circle of local environmental leaders. Through their work with the Stewards, Wells and his team have donated 1,000’s of volunteer hours to improve and maintain the hiking trails in the Southern Appalachians. Some notable accomplishments include the Dawson Forest Wildcat Tract, a group of six trails that span approximately 15 miles, and the Amicalola River Handicap Access Trail. “We do this stuff all year and you never know how people are going to feel about it, but we are seeing that a lot of people really enjoy what we do,” Wells said. Visit www.mountainstewards.org for more information about the group’s accomplishments and upcoming projects. Voting for Cox Conserves Heroes began August 10 and continues through August 31. Visit http://www.coxconservesheroes.com/atlanta-ga/finalists.aspx to see a videotaped interview and cast your vote for Wells to help him and his team continue keeping the trails of the Southern Appalachians places you and your family can enjoy. Atlanta’s 2009 Cox Conserves Hero will be announced in early September.
