Don’t worry, they say. What do they know? Worry all you want! Worry is a form of fear. When FDR in 1933 said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” do you think people stopped being afraid? Well, maybe some did, but the quote is still nothing more than a silly palliative. Face it, there’s plenty to worry about all the time. “Everything’s going to be okay?” Any rational person knows that it’s not. On the other hand, if rationality is the measure, worry doesn’t make sense either. It self fulfills, helping to bring about that which is being worried about. So anyway, I worry all I want until I get bored with it. The kicker is that even if the stuff I worry about comes true, it turns out to be something I can cope with. After which I find new things to worry about. Like ending sentences with prepositions which I’ve done three times in this essay. Seriously, that is a worry. Maybe I’m a lousy writer. Maybe I’ll die unfulfilled. But why worry about it? Better I should go to work.
