After over two months of rigorous research and discussion, the Citizen Advisory Committee on Commission Structure is now preparing for the first round of public hearings, designed to gather input from the citizens of Pickens County. The CAC will consider all comments and suggestions they receive from the public as they continue the process of drafting a working multi-commission form of government. Voters will ultimately decide if they would like to transition to a multi-commissioner board in the November 2010 general election.
Public Hearing Dates: Thursday, July 16, 7 p.m. at Appalachian Technical College
Monday, July 20, 7 p.m.
at Episcopal Church of the Holy Family
Thursday, July 23, 7 p.m. at
Hill City Elementary School
The CAC is asking that residents who attend the public hearings address the two following questions in their statements to committee members. •If you would choose to go to a different form of government, what multi-person form of government would you prefer and why? •What questions must the CAC be prepared to answer when the committee makes a specific recommendation at public hearings to be held in October 2009? The CAC would also like comments to be submitted in writing with the name and contact information of the speaker attached. You can either bring a hard copy of your comment with you to the public hearing or you can submit it via e-mail at PickensCAC@gmail.com, or by traditional mail to: Citizen Advisory Committee Pickens County Commission Structure PO Box 2162 Jasper, Ga 30143
Members of the public who will not be attending the hearings are also invited to submit their comments. Keep in mind this first round of hearings will not be presented in question/answer format. The CAC will be in “listen mode,” according to CAC Chair Phil Anderson. But these July hearings will include a brief introduction on each of the five basic forms of county government used in Georgia, presented either by Government Relations Manager for the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, Dave Wills, or by CAC member Larry Butler. Continued on page 9A During the second round of hearings scheduled for October, CAC will present its recommendation for the structure of the multi-person commission, and members of the committee will respond to questions from the public.
