Sports Car Club of America evaluating sites for hill climb

6/25/2009 - Angela Reinhardt

Members of the Sports Car Club of America are currently investigating potential sites to host an annual hill climb race, an event that would bring anywhere from 40 – 100 sports cars (and sports-car lovers) to Pickens County.
Pickens County Economic Development Director Gerry Nechvatal told the Economic Development Council a member of SCCA is now researching the history of hill climbing for use in a book and, as a result, “The SCCA is now investigating the possibility of using a road in Pickens to bring back the historic Burnt Mountain Hill Climb as a regular event.”
The sport pits a wide variety of racing cars against the clock in an uphill battle. The driver with the lowest time wins.
Nechvatal said, however, “They are still in the preliminary stages. The next step is for them to come and do some trial runs…I think it would be a lot of fun for everybody here and we could really build some tourism around the event. There is a lot of possibility.”
Roads being considered for the event have not yet been released to the public.
