Congressman Nathan Deal of Gainesville announced his plans at a press conference last week to run for governor of Georgia when Sonny Perdue’s term ends. “Today my wife Sandra and I invite you to join us on a great adventure, a quest to become elected the governor of the great state of Georgia,” said Deal to the applause of the crowd on May 1st. A video of the announcement can be found at The Gainesville Times online. Deal has served as congressman of the 9th district, which includes Pickens County, since 1992. His service to the state of Georgia began in 1970 when he served as Assistant District Attorney in the Northeastern Judicial Circuit. Before that, he served for two years as a captain in the United States Army. As a Congressional member, Representative Deal currently serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Mike Evans, former state DOT Transportation Board chairman, announced the following day he would run for Deal’s soon to be vacated Congressional seat. Evans once represented Pickens County as part of his district on the DOT board. Evans stated he would “take a stand for the values North Georgians embrace,” and to protect them from what he called “Obama liberalism,” according to news websites.
