Being chosen as the 2006 Golden Deed award winner was an honor for Larry Kellogg. But perhaps the truest reward was his daughter's comment following the long list of accomplishments and volunteer work attributed to him - "It doesn't say in there, through that whole long list of things he's done, that through all of it he was a great family man as well."
Each year the Pickens County Retired Educators Association selects one person as the recipient of the Golden Deed award, an honor established to recognize those who give much to the community in which they live.
Kellogg was born at the Roper Clinic in Jasper in 1943 and raised as a toddler in Pickens County. After completing his education, he returned to Pickens County in 1969 and served 38 years as a pharmacist at Jasper Drug Store, from where he recently retired.
"This Golden Deed Award will not cover all the things he has done for our community," said PCRE President Jim Dorsey. "It has been a pleasure in my life to know you Larry. You are a fine, fine Christian person and I don't know anybody who is more representative of this award."
Kellogg's Pickens County roots were established by his mother and his father, who served as the first Agriculture teacher at Pickens High School. While a young man, Kellogg was a Cub Scout and Eagle Scout, and church was always an important part of his life, according to his nomination letter.
In addition to church choir, the Baptist Training Union and Sunday School, Kellogg played trombone in the high school band. He was active in scouts, track, football and basketball.
He attended North Georgia College and graduated from the University of Georgia. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam war. Kellogg met his future wife, Lynn, while in eighth grade, ultimately marrying her in 1966. They have one daughter, Jennifer, who is an Assistant Professor at Shorter College in Rome, and a 16-month-old grandson.
Serving as president and vice-president of the local chamber of commerce, Kellogg also chaired the Georgia Marble Festival for two years. He was chairman of the Fourth of July committee and president of the Pickens County Jaycees. He has received recognition as a 25 year Mason and served as Pharmacy Consultant at Grandview Health Care Center.
Kellogg has been involved with the Lions Club, served as president and vice-president of the Jasper Merchants Association, a member of the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, a charter member in Leadership Pickens, member of the National Committee for Pharmaceutical Association and chairman and host of the Pickens County political forum debate.
"For those and many more reasons, the 2006 Golden Deed is awarded to Larry Kellogg for unselfish and unlimited service to the people of Pickens County.
Kellogg is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper where he has served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the finance and personnel committees and co-chair of the communion committee. He is currently a deacon.
Among his other activities, Kellogg also served as chairman and vice-president of the Pickens County Library Board of Directors, Pickens County Board of Health and Shorter College's Board of Visitors. He was chairman and vice-chairman of Mountainside Hospital's Board of Trustees, a member of the American Legion and a volunteer with the American Heart Association.
"We're very proud of him and feel he's really deserving," said his wife Lynn.
