Larry Starr on CARES, God and joining the “70s club”
Larry Starr is executive director at the CARES Food Pantry.
Why are you moving to a part-time executive director position at CARES?
For several years I have been praying and contemplating what to do about retirement. I want to do God’s will as long as I live but I dont want to work for a living as long as I live. Now that I’ve joined the “70 Club” I’ve decided to cut back on working for a living after December.
What would you say are your biggest accomplishments since you've been at CARES?
Bringing more glory to God by helping hurting people with spiritual, mental and physical needs. To God be the glory!
What was the most popular food item among CARES clients?
Macaroni and cheese.
What do you want to accomplish on your next phase in life?
I am already in my next phase of life. I want to do more work for God - wherever He leads me.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
Galatians 2:20 - “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.”
What's on your bookshelf? On your playlist?
Bibles, Christian books and mystery novels. Christian music and a little bit of country music.
What do you do for fun?
Doing things with my six grandchildren.
What are some of your guilty pleasures?
Eating a special food as my personal reward.
Do you have any hobbies?
My only hobby would be collecting or saving things of value to me and treasuring them from time to time.
What was the best vacation you've even been on?
My wife Barbara and I flew to Seattle and drove a circular trip up into Canada for a week and back down into the northwestern states. Second would be going to Athens and Corinth, Greece and our cruise of the Greek Isles.
