Main Street will be closed all day Monday, June 25 and Tuesday, June 26 for resurfacing, weather permitting. If it rains, the paving will commence on the next suitable day.
The street will be paved from the Spring Street intersection to the stop sign at the wooden bridge.
Mark Whitfield Street will be used as a detour and north-south connector for vehicle traffic. Motorists wishing to patronize Main Street businesses can park on Mark Whitfield Street or any side street, as well as the courthouse parking area.
“We are trying to make things work as well as possible for the public and business owners, and get this project completed quickly,” said city hall employee Lonnie Waters.
The city of Jasper alerted Main Street businesses about the closure ahead of time.
“They all seemed to be appreciative of what we are trying to do,” Waters said. “Several of them asked us not to close the road on Friday because they are busier that day, so we accommodated and rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday.”
Main Street is one road in the most recent group of roads being resurfaced with SPLOST funding. Other roads in this group that will be paved beginning this week include J.L. White at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, Railroad Street, the south end of Depot Street, Wall Street, Northeast Street, Southeast Street, and Mark Whitfield Street. Waters said there is no set schedule for these roads, but they will work around the Main Street project, which has a bigger impact on businesses and traffic.
