Beginning April 9th, artists and art lovers are invited to Art Pickens’ first “Artist Gathering,” which will be held the second Saturday of each month through November.
The event is an opportunity for local artists to gather and network with fellow artists, and meet and talk with residents and other art lovers from around north Georgia.
Crystal Merrell, president of event sponsor Pickens Art & Cultural Alliance, said the idea was borne out of a conversation between local folk painter Billy Roper and potter C. Larry Wilson. They felt there needed to be a low-pressure environment for artists to communicate with one another and with the general public.
“It’s going to have that plein air feel, but not just for painters,” said Merrell. “We want it more free-flowing. All artists, regardless of ability or fame, are invited to come out and paint, take photos or play acoustic instruments.”
The gathering will be held at “Peace Park” beside the old jail in historic downtown Jasper at the corner of N. Main Street and Mark Whitfield Drive. Occasionally the gathering will be held in other locations. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Artists who wish to participate are encouraged to sign up ahead of time because space is limited. There are rules and regulations participants must follow, which are outlined in the information packet.
A list of artists scheduled for the April 9 event will be posted on the Art Pickens Facebook page.
Demonstrations are encouraged. Examples of art forms include original works by the artist of the following: painting, pottery, poetry, carving, sculpture, fiber arts, crafts, jewelry, acoustic music, etc. Artists of all levels are welcome and encouraged to interact and network with other artist and the public.
All events are weather permitting. Cancellations due to weather will be posted on their Facebook Page.
