American Legion Auxillary hard at work for community

By Kelli Blohm,
ALA Unit 149 President
Our ALA Unit 149 has worked hard this year to help those in need in the Pickens County Community. Our October 24th event BATTLE OF THE BANDS held at Rocco’s which raised almost $3,500 and we’ve been giving that back to the Pickens County area through different programs such as our gift to CARES of Jasper a few weeks ago.

This week is another example of the commitment of ALA Unit 149. Our last monthly meeting we decided to give funds to Marine Corps League Jasper Detachment for their Veterans Memorial that will be built at a later date in 2016 in Lee Newton Park. We met with some of them on Monday December 7th to give them $1,000. towards this beautiful memorial. We also purchased $1,000. in Wal-Mart gift cards that will be given out between now and Christmas to help make veterans and their families’ Christmas a little easier.
We gave $500 to the American Cancer Society as a thank you for supporting us with the assistance of local resident Paul Poore, member of Relay for Life of Pickens County. He ran the car and bike show aspect of our event that was sponsored by Shottenkirk Ford.
On Friday December 11th we’ll be picking up 30 wreaths that we’ve purchased to be placed atSunrise Memorial Cemetery.  They will be placed at the cemetery on Sunday afternoon in honor of the veterans interred there.
I was also contacted by someone from the Jasper Elementary about needing a new American Flag to fly at their school and we’ve purchased and scheduled a flag raising ceremony for 1:30 p.m. on December 11th. All are welcome to attend as the North Georgia Honor Guard will be performing a fag folding ceremony along with reciting the 13 folds of the American Flag.
Many of us will be spending our Saturday at the Georgia National Cemetery with the laying of the wreaths and then returning to Pickens County where we have been invited to attend a toy drive being done by a new non profit organization called T.A.P.S. USA (True American Patriots Serving the USA). They are collecting toys for the local Marine Corps League of Jasper that will be distributed through out the Pickens County community. This event runs from 4-8 p.m. at Rocco’s Pub so please feel free to stop in and drop off a new unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more.
I’d like to take a moment to once again thank all of the people in this wonderful community who have supported ALA 149 and its endeavors to help others by either your monetary donations through out the year and/or your participation. We look forward to serving you once again in 2016.
Until then we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
