John Weaver is running unopposed for another term as Jasper’s mayor this year. In an interview last week, he wasn’t exactly sure how many elections he has won to retain the post, though he remembered that he took office in August 1992.
At that time, Weaver was running a fitness club and made his first foray into politics to win the open mayor post after another longtime mayor, Lee Newton, died while in office.
The first election was hard-fought with another former mayor and a council member among the four-person field. Since then Weaver has mostly been unopposed or won handily.
During an interview at City Hall, Weaver both recapped his long career and looked ahead to the next term.
