Message to the Dragon Nation from new Athletic Director

By Chris Parker
District Athletic Director
As I start the new role of District Athletic Director, I want to highlight the goals for our program and share my excitement for the 2015-16 year.
Pickens County athletics provide a supportive atmosphere where coaches challenge the intellectual and physical abilities of athletes and foster strength of character. The goals of the Pickens County athletic program are:

•    field competitive teams within the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and Region 7-AAAA and its member schools to bring pride to the Dragon Community
•    have a coordinated middle and high school athletic program
•    balance athletics with academics
•    develop the ability to set realistic but challenging individual and team goals
•    develop respect and appreciation for teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials
•    develop self-discipline and a commitment to personal and team excellence
•    exhibit good sportsmanship at all athletic contests
•    be an integral part of the Pickens County Community

To Our Families:
As we return to the routine of class schedules and homework, students are busy practicing for athletic events and performances. “Champions are made when no one is watching” is a popular message coaches use to encourage practice and training, things spectators usually don’t see. Recognize how hard students work when no one is watching them – they put in long hours even when they can’t hear the roar of a crowd or bask in the spotlight.
Please say “thanks” for the time and dedication our coaches and volunteers give to our community. We see teachers in classrooms, but don’t know of the countless hours planning, grading, and learning new skills. This work happens outside a normal school day so they can take time to guide and coach our students.
We want and value feedback. Our student and community advisory boards will facilitate communication and participation. We ask you to follow the same requirements we ask of our students: show a positive attitude, encourage and support all players and families, and demonstrate good sportsmanship to all teams we meet throughout each season.

To Our Students:
Our programs give you an opportunity to represent your schools and our community while learning self-discipline, dedication, pride in performance, and respect for others. We will encourage you to reach for excellence and provide you with life skills for success – in and out of the classroom. Remember, you represent an entire community of Dragon fans. Work hard, play hard, and have fun!

To Our Coaches:
The entire Dragon Nation values your dedication and desire to see student-athletes succeed. I know your programs will be able to reach their full potential as we work to map the best course for individual, team, and program successes. Thank you for all you do for our schools and our community. Rest up before your respective season starts – you’re going to need it!
To the Entire Dragon Nation:
Everyone associated with athletics in Pickens County, from Recreation Department and Jasper Youth leagues up to the middle and high schools, understands success comes from the support of the entire community. Booster clubs, fans, coaches, volunteers, and community partners are all needed to support and grow our Dragon family. From the bottom of my green heart, I say “thank you” to the entire Dragon Nation for all you do to support Pickens County!
I know this will be a great year and invite you to come out and show your spirit for all our extracurricular programs. Go Dragons and Dragonettes!
