Wednesday, June 3, Georgia DOT crews at the intersection of Main Street and Highway 53 Business fill a pothole midday.
Over the next few weeks motorists can expect to see Georgia DOT equipment along the stretch of Highway 53 (SR 53 Business) between Main Street and Mary Street in Jasper, where a GDOT crew will fill nearly two dozen potholes.
“It’s part of our routine maintenance along Highway 53 Business,” said GDOT Area Engineer Sam Wheeler.
On Wednesday, June 3 the crew filled three holes at the Main Street intersection. Wheeler said they should -weather permitting - complete all 22 holes in a couple of weeks.
The patch work is completely funded through GDOT’s maintenance budget. It does not come from 2014 SPLOST revenues, which have been earmarked for roads projects in the county.
Wheeler said his office waited to begin work until school let out for summer due to the location of the Jasper Middle School campus along that portion of the state route.
“We waited to avoid delays,” said Wheeler, who called the patch work being performed more “comprehensive,” requiring crews to saw out the asphalt surface before making repairs.
While work is underway one lane of the Highway 53 Bus. route will be shut down, but Wheeler encourages residents to use back roads for effective detours.
“When we patched on Tuesday we had no issues with the traffic,” he said. “It went very smoothly. I think locals know how to use those back roads well in that area.”
