Issues swirl over county airport debt, priorities

Look down that lonesome runway -- Businesses have not flocked to locate at the airport tech park.

 

Commission Chairman Rob Jones said he doesn’t care if no new work happens at the Pickens County Airport, “the $900,000 has got to be paid.” 

This $900,000 is a portion of the $3.977 million bond [loan] issued by the Pickens County Development Authority in 2004 and used to develop the 17-acre tract adjacent to the airport. This tract has been constructed to Federal Aviation

Administration standards - including a central taxiway - in hopes of attracting pilots who will build and lease hangars on the property.  

      While the airport authority and Commissioner Jones both agree it’s a priority to secure the money, there is some difference of opinion about where that money could come from.
