Relay for Life this Saturday

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a community celebration in honor of those who have survived cancer and in remembrance of those who have been lost to cancer. It also honors those who are the caregivers of the cancer patients. Relay For Life raises funds for the American Cancer Society and allows the community to be a part of the fight against cancer. During Relay, team members take turns walking the track, camping out, enjoying entertainment, food and

games! This year’s theme  is Superheroes. Many teams have chosen a specific superhero and will be dressed as that cancer fighting superhero throughout the day.

Ceremonies kick-off at 11 a.m. with a special tribute for Armed Forces Day. There will be tons of entertainment, with a very special Mister-Relay competition where the male relay team members dress up in campy costumes as women and the women do the same and dress up in campy costumes as men.

The Luminary ceremony will begin around 9 p.m. and is held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle to cancer.

Luminaries are lit and lined around the track. During this time all other Relay activities stop and team members are given time to reflect and remember the importance of why Relay is so important.

So make sure you plan to come out and support Relay For Life of Pickens County at Lee Newton Park Saturday, May 16.
